About

Illustrators from Germany and the Czech Republic demonstrate, through direct comparison, how visual languages are shaped by cultural, historical, and societal contexts and how they develop over time. Using concrete examples from book, editorial, and applied illustration, the following becomes apparent:

  • which cultural traditions and influences shape visual languages
  • how these influences are reflected in style, motifs, narrative approach and visual codes
  • how illustrators pick up on, reflect upon and creatively advance cultural developments
  • the similarities and differences that can be identified between both countries

The comparison makes it clear: visual languages are not universal or arbitrary forms of expression. They emerge from people who translate their cultural experiences, perspectives, and social contexts into images.
