What happens to literature when a country enters a new political and cultural era? In conversation with the Hungarian writer Andrea Tompa, the German journalist Lothar Müller explores Hungary’s recent transformation through the perspective of literature. The discussion will address the legacy of Péter Esterházy and Péter Nádas, the future of Hungary’s cosmopolitan literary tradition, and the close yet complex relationship between Hungarian and German history and culture. Andrea Tompa will also reflect on her experience as a writer and public intellectual during the Orbán era, her books and writing, and the challenges and expectations of the period that follows.
