About

The war waged by Russia against Ukraine since 2014 has drastically transformed not only the country under attack, but also Russia itself, including its culture. How does this long military conflict affect means of artistic expression, and how does it transform them? In what ways do Russian artists react to their country’s military aggression? How does the Kremlin establishment work with culture? What does the term “Russian exile” mean today, and to whom does it refer? Can Russian art today open up a new vision for Russia’s post-colonial future? These topics will be discussed by Czech Slavist Tomáš Glanc, American historian Marci Shore, and German-Russian sociologist Mischa Gabowitsch. The discussion will be informed by Tomáš Glanc’s new book, The Russian Archipelago at War against Ukraine: Culture and Contexts 2022–2025, to be published by Karolinum Press in September 2026.
