About
In a small city in 20th-century Europe, hypnotist Leo Svengali and his nimble assistant Elis are inseparable until the dictator Tito tries to separate them. In The Maribor Hypnosis, Czech novelist Dora Kaprálová tells a story of white and black magic, loyalty and abuse of power, and the power of love to save a situation. Light yet profound, and filled with language-based humour, in 2026 the novel won Kaprálová two major Czech literary awards and the European Union Prize for Literature. In conversation with representatives of the institutions that confer the awards, Dora Kaprálová will discuss contemporary European literature, history, people, and, yes, flying. The book’s German publisher will ask the questions. This will be something to see!
