Audio is one of the fastest-growing formats in publishing, creating new opportunities for people to engage with content wherever they are. Yet scholarly and professional books present unique challenges, as figures, tables, formulas and references were never designed to be experienced through audio alone. In this session, Springer Nature and Bookwire will explore the opportunities and challenges of bringing complex academic content into an audio format. We will discuss the role audio can play in improving accessibility and inclusion, as well as enabling new ways of engaging with research, and share insights from our ongoing work in this area. From adapting manuscripts into engaging audio experiences and exploring different narration approaches to ensuring quality and transparency, we will reflect on the opportunities and challenges of scholarly audiobooks. The session will examine how audio can help make research and professional knowledge more accessible to readers, listeners and learners.
